Ghughutiya and Uttarayani: flour, jaggery and ghee from the hills.
In Kumaon, Makar Sankranti is Ghughutiya, and across Uttarakhand it is Uttarayani. Families knead flour with jaggery, shape it into little ghughute, fry them in ghee and string them into garlands for the children, who call the crows to share them the next morning. Uttarayani melas are held in the hills and wherever hill families have settled.
Everything for a batch of ghughute is here, from the shops that make it: hill ghee, flours, jaggery sweets, and the winter dals and honey that go with the season.
Ghughutiya has passed for this year. The next one falls on 14 January 2027 (Makar Sankranti, 14 or 15 January), and the shelves below are open all year.
