Harela: the festival of green, and food from the hills that grow it.
Harela marks the first day of Shravan and the start of the rains. About ten days before, families sow several kinds of grain in a small basket or pot of earth and keep it indoors. On the day the green shoots are cut and placed on the heads of family members with blessings, and many people plant trees.
The shelves below carry what the hill terraces grow: dals and grains, spices, honey and ghee, from the family shops that grow and make them.
Harela has passed for this year. The next one falls on 16 July 2027 (the first day of Shravan, usually 16 or 17 July), and the shelves below are open all year.
