Phool Dei: gifts and food from the hills

Phool Dei: the spring flower festival of the hills.

Phool Dei falls on the first day of Chaitra. Early in the morning children go from house to house with baskets of spring flowers, buransh and fyonli among them, and scatter them on each doorstep with a blessing for the home. They are given rice, jaggery and sweets in return.

Spring is buransh season, and the shelves below carry buransh sharbat, hill honey and the sweets that are handed out on the day.

Phool Dei has passed for this year. The next one falls on 14 March 2027 (the first day of Chaitra, usually 14 or 15 March), and the shelves below are open all year.
